Finally finished, finish with different methods as well, the first two models were handcraft color, using brushes and acrylic colors(First one on the left and the very right one), there is one that was printed at Laguardia studio by the professional 3D printing machine, which is the middle one. Then I 3D printed another 2, spray painted them(second in the first row and fourth in the first row), and the last one, I tumbled to make it look like a statue(the highest one).
This one is holding a coffee/tea mug cup, I was intended to make it look like a Starbucks cup. The flag was inserted into a clay. Body spray painted, other parts hand painted. No finish was coated.
This one is the smoking figure, he has to smoke to be relaxed from watching the sky for bird poops. Body spray painted, other parts hand painted. No finish was coated.
The Laguardia Studio 3D printed with color, they didn’t get the color quite right, and I was having a hard time choosing the colors, it looks very different from what the Pantone cards and the monitor. I sand it a lot and add a glossy finish.
This is the first one I did, now it looks a little bit old, I added a pipe this time to make it look less boring. Hand-painted with a glossy finish.
An all clean one without any features, Nancy wrote the Chinese characters for me. This was hand-painted with a glossy finish.
This is a stone statue, tumbled a raw 3D model for 5 days, no 3D printing texture could be seen anymore. I made a little clothes for him using fabrics. In China and Japan, people usually put this kind of clothes to stone statues of little god and fairy.
AND the package.
I actually made two versions, the 2 pictures above were the mono version, there is also a colored one. The one in the above pictures was laser-cut and engraved. I created a little story about the god and print that on a paper and stick that to the back of the box.
This is the package with color, I didn’t print it out, these are rendered images using Adobe Dimensions.
I rendered the comic style character in Blender.
I made the stone statue model the mystery model in the blind box.
Some Process photos.
This experience is too much work but super fun, I loved it. And based on this, I am thinking about building a website where people could leave their concerns or stories and I will create a little god as a toy for them.
Modeling the toy in Blender (it was very time consuming) and 3d printed(2 hours+) it.
I think I am going to 3D print it, I only want to use plastic, either the real toy plastic like resin or PC or 3D printing.
My plan is 3D print the model, and then paint colors to it, make props that he was holding, the flag, the sunglasses, and cigarette. Additionally, I would like to put a magnet at the bottom which could enable it sticking on to cars, I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.
Still on the idea of the little god who can prevent birds from shitting on the car exposing in the open air. Had a little more sketches. There are many aspects that I haven’t decided yet, one of the concerns is the size, I think to make a prototype might be a good way to reach the decision.
The figure has those features:
Looking up to the sky, but I haven’t decided about his facial expression yet, should it be normally peaceful face with much confidence or should it be full of rage in order to scare the birds away. Or maybe he should wear sunglasses since he needs to look up to the sky.
His costume should like Ancient Chinese (Tang or Song Dynasty (BC618-1279)) governmental official’s dress. There could be some textures on his coat but haven’t come to a clear idea of what the texture should be, some symbol that can be linked to his job or some other features. I haven’t decided what color his costume would be, I will try green and red first.
On his right hand, he would hold this magical banner saying “Bird Shits Go Away” in Chinese, on his other hand, he might hold a symbolized weapon, such as a sword or a jingle ring or sleigh bells that could make a noise that birds dislike.
It could be put on cars, either inside or outside, in order to put it outside, it should have a magnet inside to hold on to the car, if it is installing inside the car, it should have a non-slip bottom or a small hook to be hanged.
Here are some inspirations:
These 2 figures above are 2 of Japanese 7 lucky gods, I think I can gain something from their appearance because they are also the ones who protect people and people pray to them wishing for different things, such like fortunes or good harvest or longevity, each of them has different realm and background story.
This is a reference on the hat that the god is wearing, I took the No.7 and No.8 as reference.
The Japanese Daruma Doll is also an inspiration for me, it is almost everywhere in Japan, it is molded after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen School of Buddhism. It is sometimes considered as a toy, a tumbler, most of the time it is a wishing doll. When purchased, the figure’s eyes are both blank white. A user will then select a goal or wish and paint in the left eye of the figure’s two eyes. Once the desired goal is achieved, the right eye is filled in. I like the face a lot and I might create a very similar face to this.
This one below is a Chinese Bowl figure that I saw on Pinterest, I think it is very interesting and might give me some inspiration on the outfit of my design.
Going to make the prototype with Clay, started by modeling an inside fill with foil paper, which could save some clay.
Putting on the skin with clay.
Make the cloth to put on.
Also made two arms with foil paper and put them on.
But I can’t get the size right, so I just made arms with pure clay.
When making the second one, I have something different in my mind, to make it a general, a warrior in golden armor.
I am not very happy with the result. Here are some thoughts, and where I am heading next.
I think the clay is not easy to work with, I guess if I have some decent tools to deal with clay, it might be better, the fingerprints left on it always drove me crazy. Colors are very easily to get on each other if I am not careful enough and do not wash my hands a lot between switching colors.
I think there is more opportunity space in designing the character, there should be more elements adding in the character, now it is too singular, nearly dull, I should do it like creating collage art, but in the end, make it more integrated rather than “Frankensteined”.
Maybe it is the material, they look like half-hearted made statues in a small town temple, and they are not cool enough, they are not fashionable enough, they are not artistic enough, their looks really need to be upgraded.
The Material, I don’t vision this to be in clay, I wish they could be in plastic, I will learn some CAD to make models and render in computer to be more precise.
The background story can be enriched as well.
Maybe I will change my mind and choose another idea for the final……but now, I am still very into this Anti-BirdShit God.!
And I had some new ideas, still not satisfied but this time I add sunglasses and a canon, he needs to look up to the sky a lot, so sunglasses are necessary, he needs to eliminate the bird shit, the canon can shoot the shit to eliminate it. There are a few versions, with a back flag saying “bird shit go away”, a canon that shoots out the flag saying “bird shit go away”, a version that he also smokes a cigarette indicating he’s a very confident middle-age man, in Chinese “Dashu”, in Japanese “Osan”.
According to the ideas, I started to paint with acrylic colors, I thought spray painting would look much better, I don’t know how to deal with those cracks painting with a brush. I started to work drilling a hole and use the stick that Ben gave me to hold the figure.
I did the first idea of Doraemon’s arm first, haven’t noticed that this photo is out of focus. I paint the body(arm) first.
And then the head(hand), the color is fine, it looks like Doraemon’s color, but those cracks really make me feel bad. The paint is not very balanced distributed and intersecting part looks bad, too.
I started to work on a second one blocking the head part with tapes so that two colors would not interfere with each other.
But I realized when I took those tape off, I will still drop white paintings to the blue part using the brush, so I did this.
The left is the second one and the right is the first one.
I’m not satisfied with the result, this one could not hold a phone or anything yet, first, the hand needs to have either a flat surface or a magnet inside to fix the phone or anything else. Secondly, the weight of the figure itself is too light, it could be more stable if I can add some weights inside the body part. The most important part is the painting, it looks very rough, I want it to be smoother.
Found this video online. Pouring acrylic might be a good way to do this, I might give this a try using the last piece. Maybe I should cut the head off, using this technic for both the body and head, and glue them together.
Cut one of the Doraemon’s head off with the band saw and tried to recolor it with this method revealing by the picture below. It turns out not as I expected, still not very smooth.
The two Chinese Tang Dynasty female figures.
I made the hair with clay but the problem is I got the wooden body dirty by the mud. I paint the face of one of them, looks not good. I left the other one blank, thought that might be better. Next step is to make some clothes for them, bake the clay and add a layer of gloss finish.
Did a little modification with the face, I covered the face with oven-bake clay, now it looks better, and I wrapped one of the two ladies with clothes made by clay as well, not very successful.
I left the face blank because I think it is better this way, I was also thinking about using cosmetics to cover the face.
I also made the Bathing Man and develop the idea a bit little more.
I cut the body and the head, and also paint a woodblock with a greenish color. Next step is to add some features to the face and the bathtub.
Made a little towel with oven-bake clay, did some gloss finish.
Laser cut a pair of glasses, it’s half transparent as it looks like in an environment of hot water, the steams are on the glasses. The red board and yellow Chinese characters says Public Bath, this kind of board design is very common in China, you can see many small stores/groceries/public bath/liqueur store…. all have the same design.
When I was living in Beijing, I park my car in the open air, there was a parking lot full of trees, but also a lot of birds, many many mornings I would find that my windows are full of bird shits, that smells stinky and looks uncomfortable, I have to deal with those bird shit before I can start my car. I always wish to have some kind of god who is in charge of keeping the car clean from bird shits falling. This is sort of the story why I created this character.
